Wheelchair FishingFishing from a wheelchair is not an easy thing to do and can bring on many challenges. The two biggest challenges being.
First, I hope to collect a wide range of information regarding adaptive equipment that can help wheelchair users successfully catch and "release" fish independently. Notice the quotes on release. The release is the biggest problem for someone with limited hand dexterity. I believe we can find a way to reliably remove the hook from a fish's mouth and this will open up a world of independent fishing for those that have not felt that independence before.Second, through the cooperation of the fishing community I believe we can compile a large resource of accessible fishing locations. Most people think of an accessible fishing spot as one that has been specifically designed for wheelchairs. The truth is, there are many sites already accessible from a wheelchair. Not just piers, but rivers, small streams, lakes and ponds. Finding them is the problem. Most able bodied people don't even realize that they're fishing an accessible site, all they know is it was an easy spot to get to. Through asking questions and the sharing of information, many of these sites will become known as good wheelchair spots. These challenges can only be overcome with the help of the readers of the web page. I ask you, the reader, to share any information about adaptive equipment and accessible fishing sites. Please pass the information on to this site so we can share it with others looking for the same information.Thank you. |
